Faith and Freelancing: A Natural Fit
If you’re a person of faith looking to earn from home, you’re not alone. Many freelancers tell me their beliefs shape not just what they do, but where they choose to work. The good news? There are legitimate employers who actively seek people who share that worldview. Whether you’re a writer, admin pro, or tech specialist, faith-aligned remote work is more accessible than you think. Here’s where to start looking.
Christian Remote Employers Worth Your Time
Several faith-based organizations hire remote talent across a wide range of roles. BELAY, for example, is a Christian company that regularly hires virtual executive assistants, bookkeepers, and social media managers — but they do restrict hiring to most US states except California, Montana, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Grand Canyon University and Bushnell University both hire online adjunct faculty across many subjects, making them solid options if you have teaching experience. And K-LOVE, the Christian media network, hires remote engineers, app developers, and other tech roles with full benefits included.
On the nonprofit side, Samaritan’s Purse offers remote positions in engineering, system analysis, and administrative support alongside their global missionary work. Christian Care Ministry (the team behind Medi-Share) hires for care management, call center, health and wellness, and engineering roles — though they only hire in about 18 specific states, so check their list before applying.
How to Find and Apply for These Roles
Don’t just shotgun applications. Each employer has quirks you can use to your advantage. For Lifeway Christian Resources, most roles are Nashville-based but their career site lets you filter by “remote” in the location dropdown — use that filter to skip past in-person listings entirely. At Samaritan’s Purse, search for the keyword “remote” or “virtual” to surface work-from-home opportunities hidden among their on-site listings. For Bushnell University, add “online” to your keyword search on their jobs page to filter for distance teaching gigs. A little search savvy saves you hours.
Stack Your Skills for Better Offers
Many of these roles overlap with in-demand freelance skills. Grant writing, case management, bookkeeping, social media management, and adjunct teaching all translate well into independent contracting. If you’re just starting out, consider building one of these skills on your own first — take a course on nonprofit grant writing, get a bookkeeping cert, or build a portfolio of social media content. That way when a faith-based employer posts a remote opening, you’re not just qualified — you’re at the top of the pile. Faith might open the door, but competence is what gets you hired.
Watch for Location Restrictions and Time Zones
One practical gotcha: many Christian remote employers restrict hiring to specific states. Christian Care Ministry and BELAY both have state-by-state limitations, so don’t assume “remote” means “anywhere in the US.” Read the fine print before you fall in love with a job posting. Also, some roles require overlapping hours with a central office time zone — factor that in if you’re on the West Coast or outside the US entirely.
